Professional Membership

Professional Membership £24.17 per month

 

You hold an occupational therapy qualification recognised by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) AND are either registered with the HCPC or eligible for registration with the HCPC AND are resident in the UK. 

 
 
 

New Professional members receive 25% off their fees for the first year.

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - £6m cover for each member on a claims occurring basis. The policy is worldwide excluding USA/Canada but only for claims first made in European Union, Channel Islands and Australia.
  • UNISON membership (a minimum 4 week period in membership is required before legal assistance can be accessed). The union is not able to provide advice or represent members on issues that occurred prior to joining the union.
  • For lecturers in higher education, UNISON has agreed joint membership arrangements with UCU and EIS to provide an industrial relations service. COT members should complete the relevant notification forms available on the COT website in order to access this service.

Student Membership

Student Membership £5.00 per month

 

You are enrolled on an occupational therapy pre-registration programme at a higher education institution (HEI) in the UK, OR are studying a College of Occupational Therapists (COT) recognised support worker qualification (with a COT student membership option).

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - for periods of practice placement in the UK and overseas (excluding USA/Canada).
  • UNISON membership - includes access to products and resources but excludes casework support. Students who experience issues whilst on practice placement should seek assistance from the university practice placement co-ordinator.
 

Note 1: COT student membership provides cover for students only while engaged in activities associated with their studies. Part-time occupational therapy students who are also working as OT support workers/technical instructors or in other jobs should join an appropriate union of their choice to access industrial relations support in their workplace

 

Note 2: Students at post-registration level are not eligible for the COT student membership category.

 
 
 

Associate Membership

Associate Membership £14.16 per month

 

You are engaged in work within the recognised definition of occupational therapy, but are ineligible for registration with the HCPC. You are supervised in your occupational therapy work by a person who is eligible for COT professional membership.

 

New associate members receive 25% off their fees for the first year.

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - £6m cover for each member on a claims occurring basis.
  • UNISON membership (a 4 week period in membership is required before legal assistance can be accessed).
 

Note If you hold an occupational therapy qualification and are eligible for registration with the HCPC then you are only eligible for professional membership of COT, not associate membership, even if you are working in a support role.

Self-Employed Membership

Self-Employed Membership £18.13 per month

 

As above for professional membership, but you must be wholly self-employed.

Refer to the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) information to determine if you are self-employed.
 

 

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • COT professional indemnity cover is for all members, whether employed or self employed, but not by their employer. The policy does not provide cover for any type of entity whether that is a company or a partnership. If cover is required for any type of entity a separate policy will need to be arranged in the name of that entity.
  • UNISON membership is not included in this category of COT membership.

Overseas Membership

Overseas Membership £18.13 per month

 

 

As for Professional membership, but you must be resident outside the UK.

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - limited depending on the location of the claim. Caveat: The cover is worldwide (excl USA and Canada). Any claim must be brought under EU, Channel Islands or Australian jurisdiction.
  • UNISON membership is not included in this category of COT membership.
 

Note 1: Those living in Northern Ireland and working in the Republic of Ireland are not resident outside the UK so should be professional members. However, they cannot be provided with legal assistance in their workplace.

 

Note 2: Those living in the Republic of Ireland and working in Northern Ireland should select either overseas or professional membership dependent on their cover needs and use their work address as their primary address if they select the latter option.

Career Break Member

Career Break Member £16.50 per month

 
Only available to existing COT professional members of at least 12 months standing, taking a career break (e.g. maternity/paternity leave, carers leave or due to unemployment) of a maximum period of 12 months.

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - on a claims occurring basis.
  • UNISON membership (except for those unemployed).
 

Note: This option is not recommended to COT pre-registration student members who should move to the 25% discounted rate for new professional members for their first year post-qualification and use the career break option as and when it may be required after that to maximise the subscription saving available to them.

Retired Member

Retired Member £5.99 per month

 

 
You are an occupational therapist or support worker no longer actively employed in that role because of retirement at pensionable age, or any form of retirement recognised by employers.

 

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - on a claims occurring basis.
  • UNISON membership is not included for this category of COT member. However, a COT member with at least two years' continuous membership in the Professional, Associate, Student or Career break categories immediately prior to their retirement, who is in receipt of a pension and who is not in other paid employment, can pay a £15 life membership fee (2013) to become a UNISON retired member.
